DCJ Meets with Members from Equality Now
Hon. Justice Alfonse Chigamoy Owiny-Dollo with the team from Equality Now
KAMPALA: A team from Equality Now, an international women's rights organization, on Monday September 9, 2019 met with the Deputy Chief Justice, Hon. Justice Alfonse Chigamoy Owiny-Dollo to discuss the management of an Externship Program between the organization and the Judicial Training Institute (JTI).
The team informed the DCJ that the partnership, which started on September 1, would run for one year.
One of the activities agreed between the JTI and Equality Now is to ensure access to justice for women and girls in Uganda through increased utilization of the Protocol to African Charter on Human and People's Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa (the Maputo Protocol) in the national judicial proceedings and decisions.
The program will also enhance the application of the Maputo Protocol amongst Judicial Officers handling cases of women and girls' rights.
For the start, the organization has attached a Legal Fellow, Ms. Susan Murungi, to the chambers of the Deputy Chief Justice, to assist with the establishment of the Externship Program.
